STABILISATION COMMISSION

! MINISTER ANNOUNCES DISBANDMENT PRINCIPLES TO BE CONTINUED From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON, May 23. The Economic Stabilisation Commission is to be disbanded. The Government intends to continue the principles of stabilisation, but the duties of the commission will be taken over by the Minister in charge of Stabilisation (Mr C. M. Bowden). The commission was set up in 1942 under the Economic Stabilisation Emergency Regulations, which were later put in statutory form by the Economic Stabilisation Act. 1948.’ The members of the commission were Messrs B. C. Ashwin, Secretary to the Treasury, David Allen, P. M.’ Butler, J. H. Manning, and F. P. Walsh. All gave their services without remuneration. The disbanding of the commission is not unexpected, as it had not met since the new Government took office in December. The Government’s intention to continue stabilisation is understood to mean that the commission's staff will continue, but will be responsible to the Minister instead of the commission. This procedure has actually been adopted since December. Mr Bowden said to-day that although five years had passed since the end of the war. the Government recognised that the principles of stabilisation should be continued, and it intended to act accordingly. But although the commission was called on to deal with a very wide range of subjects during the war years, the issues remaining were now so restricted that it was felt that the Minister in charge could handle them more expeditiously. and there was no longer any need to retain the services of the members of the commission. The thanks of the Government were due to the members of the commission for the outstanding service they had rendered to New Zealand.
