CIVILIAN AMPUTEES

GREATER BENEFITS SOUGHT

When the annual conference of the New Zealand Civilian Amputees’ Association met the district medical officer of health (Dr. J. H. Blakelocki yesterday morning, they submitted to him proposals for the extension of social security benefits for civilian amputees, which Dr. Blakelock will hand on to the Minister of Health (Mr J. T. Watts).

At present each amputee is entitled to one artificial limb, with the Government paying 80 per cent, of the cost and the amputee 20 per cent. The conference recommended the Minister; (1) to extend this benefit to provide that at all times every civilian amputee is in possession of two serviceable artificial limbs; (2) that maintenance of the limbs be provided for at the cost of the social security fund, with the amputee bearing the first ten shillings of the cost of any repairs; (3) that special crutches be supplied to amputees who are unable tc wear artificial limbs; and <4) that the recently developed applicance known as the “distaff” be supplied to double-arm amputees.
