BRITISH GOLF TOURNAMENT
RECORD ENTRIES FOR AMATEUR EVENT CROWDS FLOCK TO SEE BING CROSBY (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON. May 22. The British amateur golf championship began this morning in miserable conditions of mist and rain on the Royal and Ancient Club’s Old Course at St. Andrews. With a record number of 308 entries, it will be dawn-to-dusk golf for the first three days b°fore the huge field is reduced to 32 players. To-day's programme consists of 60 first-round and 30 second-round matches. The final will be played next Saturday. Although there were dozens of noted p’aycrs hitting off to-day. only one man—the crooner. Eint? Crosby—drew the crowds. At least 100 f ' nersons waited for hours in rain and extreme cold to catch a glimpse of Croshy and watch his game against a British artisan. James Wilson. Crosby, as an attraction. had a minor riyal in a British radio singer. Donald The emmse* authorities arranged for rigid controls to prevent any stampede by “bobby-soxers" and autogranh hunters cither men am-onred. A force of 59 stewards, includin'* university students, has been recruited.
