EARTHQUAKE IN PERU
MANY CASUALTIES FEARED LIMA (Peru), May 21. A heavy death-roll was reported today as the result of a violent earthquake at Cuzco, 340 miles south-east of Lima. Rescue workers counted 50 bodies in the first few hours after the earthquake. The earthquake lasted only for four seconds, but officials estimated that 20 per cent, of the ancient -city’s buildings were destroyed or datnrged. At least 250 persons were injured, said an official. It was feared that more casualties would be discovered as salvage work progressed. One suburb was completely wiped out. but 15.000 people watching a football game outside the city escaped injury. Scores of churches, including some th:-t withstood a severe earthquake 300 years ago. were damaged or destroyed. Cuzco stands two miles above sea level in the Andes Mountains, and has a population of 45.000.
