, T . LONDON, May 19. Mr Winston Churchill adopted a non-committal attitude towards the proposal of the French Foreign Minister iMr Robert Schuman) to “integrate tne French and German steel industries. when he addressed a mass meeting of the Scottish Unionist Association at Edinburgh to-night. Mr Churchill said that while Mr Schuman’s proposal was right in principle. they must, nevertheless, consiaer carefully the way in which Britain could participate most effectively in such a larger group of European industry. “We must be careful that it does not carry with it the lowering cf British wages and standards of life and labour.’’ he said. Mr Churchill called for a supreme effort to bridge the gulf between the East and the West, “if not in frienddip. at least without the hatreds and manoeuvres of the cold war.” He wished every effort to be made on the highest level to bring home to the Soviet Government the gravity of the facts which confronted everyone. ■ Mr Churchill added.
