OBITUARY

MRS WILLIAM WOOD, 0.8. E. Many friends in Canterbury, especially those of the older generation, will regret to learn that Mrs Grace Anna Mary Wood, widow of Mr William Wood, formerly of Christchurch, died in England on May 20. She had been treated in hospital for a fortnight before her death. Mrs Wood during the years she lived in Christchurch established a splendid record of service for her church and for patriotic and welfare organisations as well as devoting herself to the care of her home and of her three step-child-ren—Mrs D. M. Homewood and Mrs T. E. Y. Scddon (both of Wellington) and Mr B. B. Wood, who was staying with her in England for the last year until her death. Mrs Wood, whose home in Christchurch was “Hadleigh,” at the corner of Springfield road and Evcrsleigh street, was an energetic worker for the Christchurch Cathedral. For some years she was president of the Mothers’ Union and the Girls’ Friendly Society, and during the First World War, she was in charge of the Women’s National Reserve. For this work she was awarded the Order of the British Empire. Mrs Wood was married in 1900. her husband being a member of one of the pioneer families of Canterbury. He died in 1921 and the next year Mrs Wood returned to England and lived with her sister. Miss Emily Wilson, at their home, “Northover,”. in Woking. Surrey.
