MR NORDMEYER'S FUTURE

QUESTION OF RETURN TO PARLIAMENT (By Our Parliamentary Reporter) Since Mr A. H. Nordmeyer was elected president of the New Zealand Labour Party interest in his political future has increased. There is no doubt that the experience and debating ability of the former Minister of Industries and Commerce would be an asset to the Opposition in the House of Representatives, but unless, a vacancy occurs Mr Nordmeyer will have to wait until the next election iif he wishes to re-enter Parliament. It is fairly certain, however, that if there is a by-election during the course of the new Parliament his party will try to obtain the Labour nomination for him. Mr Nordmeyer represented Oamaru for 14 years, but he is not likely to return to that electorate. He has acquired an interest in a building and contracting business in Wellington, and if he stands at the next General Election it will probably be as a candidate for a North Island seat. He is still undecided about his political future, however, although he intends to remain in the service of the Labour Party. Last week Mr Nordmeyer told the audience at a function in his honour at Oamaru that he had not yet made up his mind whether he would seek to re-enter Parliament. “What I do will depend on certain people—some of them are on the stage this evening.'' he said, turning io Mrs Nordmeyer and his children. “However, when the Labour Party elected me as its president, it confirmed mv interest in nolitics. and I will continue to serve Ihe cause to which I have devoted so many years of my life.'’
