ITALIAN ART

OFFER FOR CENTENNIAL DISPLAY

A collection of 160 reproductions of Italian works of art has been offered to the Art and Cultural Committee of the Canterbury Centennial Association for exhibition during the centennial celebrations. A letter making the offer was received from the Italian Minister in New Zealand (Count G. de Rege) at a meeting of the committee yesterday. The collection was at present being shown in Japan, the letter said. It was decided that this generous offer be accepted, and that further particulars be sought regarding thd size of the reproductions, so that the question of housing the exhibition could be investigated.

It is also possible that a travelling loan exhibition of British students’ work in applied arts, painting, and sculpture may be secured for display during the centennial. This exhibition was suggested by the director of the .Canterbury University College School of Art (Mr C. Lovell-Smith), who is at present in England. An approach for assistance has been made to the Department of Education, but no reply has yet been received.
