HOCKEY
FIFTH ROUND MATCHES
TECHNICAL IN LEAD
Though without the services of A. Roberts in the half line. Technical played fast, clever hockey on Saturday to beat Trinity and gain the top position In the Canterbury Hockey Association’s senior competition. University showed better positional play and more correct passing to beat Selwyn by 1 goal to 0, and Sydenham, although playing with six senior reserve players, had all the better of the game against Woolston, winning by 5 goals to 2. Championship points at the completion of the fifth round are as follows:—Technical 4. Sydenham 3J, Selwyn 3, University 2J, Trinity Ij, Woolston 1. Saturday’s matches resulted: — Sydenham 5, Woolston 2. Technical 3, Trinity 2. University 1, Selwyn 0. SYDENHAM v. WOOLSTON
Sydenham had only five of the regular team and six of the senior reserve, all of whom had played in a match earlier in the afternoon. Woolston was without J. H. Hannah, and gave away too many penalties. Sydenham’s two first goals came from brilliant solo play by W. Speedy, the youngster of the side, who Hashed in from almost half-way to leave Jones high and dry. Somewhat at sea in the first half, the substitutes in Sydenham’s front line settled down and played good hockey in the later stages, and the halves, M. Hall, M. Wall, and W. Walters, were quick to fit into position and passed neatly up to the forwards. B. Hall at left back is playing sound hockey this season. Rarely bustled, and never spectacular, he puts up a solid stonewall defence and gets his side out of a lot of trouble. A. Morten in goal shaped well and had one busy period during which he stopped three good shots.
Woolston was clumsy in the forward play, and frequently overran the ball through playing too close to the feet. L. Templeton was the pick of the halves. Fairbrother, who was brought up f om the backs, was obviously out oi place. Jones in goal had an off day, but some of the shots took a lot of stopping. W. Speedy put Sydenham two goals up by brilliant stick play early in the game, but Malone and Robinson equalled the score before half-time. Sydenham settled down in the second half and Cummms, Cumberpatch, and Fergus netted to make the final score: Sydenham 5. Woolston 2. Umpires: Messrs N. Cutler and H. Teague.
UNIVERSITY V. SELWYN Although pressing hard and repeatedly for the first quarter of an hour, Selwyn failed to penetrate the solid defence put up by R. Armstrong and D. Reid, although the latter was prone to find the line more than was necessary. Froome in goal saved many shots and kept his goal clear. E. Bennett on the right wing gave a good display in the first half, as did J. Mann in the halves. M. Chapple at centre forward shows good stick play but needs pace to be really formidable. The youthful Selwyn forwards need to place their passes to better advantage instead of trying fancy back-hand shots. G. Billcliff shows pace and had bad luck in missing a scare on two occasions. J. Donkin was Out for the first time this season, but was evidently out of form. M, Clements is showing promise of proving more than useful at right half, and J. Down has all the makings of a sound back. O. Whitford was playing his first game this season and played well, although there was a complete absence of the fly-hits that characterised his play a few years ago. The only goal was scored by M. Chapple, for University, in the first half. The final score was: University 1, Selwyn 0. Umpires: Messrs F. Bearne and B. W. Rogers. TECHNICAL V. TRINITY Although it had only 10 men on the field for the greater part of the game. Technical had enough finish to beat Trin-
ity by 3 goals to 2. Neither side played well, and only in a few instances waa constructive hockey produced. L. Lloyd, Technical's left half, gave another consistently clever display, and M. Elliott played solidly at back. R. Heney shone in the forwards for his pace and eye for an opening. M. Haywood’s showing at centre-half was the bright spot in Trinity and his trapping and passing were high-class. Technical’s first two goals were gained by A. Norman, who won two penalty bullies to give Technical the lead after 20 minutes’ play. Trinity worked hard in the second spell and C. Stafford and M. Glcntworth scored to make the tally .even. A late rally by Technical after Trinity had put on more pressure resulted in C. Dale driving home the winning goal. The umpires .were Messrs K. Hamilton and C. V. Walter.
