MINOR RACES AT WASHDYKE

RHINE LORD WINS HURDLES Ridden in a good position throughout by B. J. Langford, the' favourite, Rhine Lord, decisively won the Tekapo Hurdles after stalling off a solid challenge from Tring at the South Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday. City Light and Bridgehead lost several lengths at the start. Wee Mac crashed at the first flight when near the front. City Light was interfered with, losing his rider, and Good Shot was badly checked. Racing past the stands, Theocritus and Bon Chale were the leaders from Rhine Lord, Master Mishna, and Romantic, with three lengths to Money Bird and Tring, and eight lengths to Bridgehead, Good Shot being tailed off. Master Mishna and Romantic were in front momentarily near the mile, and then Bridgehead drew clear racing to the six furlongs from Master Mishna, Romantic, Theocritus, Rhine Lord, and Bon Chale, with three lengths to Tring and Money Bird. Romantic joined Bridgehead racing to the half mile, Rhine Lord moving forward on the rails to trail them. Rhine Lord did not, jump the second last flight well, but he ran past Bridgehead and Romantic on the turn and, after leading over the last flight, he stalled off Tring’s challenge. Romantic was five lengths back third, and Master Mishna was two lengths away fourth. Bon Chale, Theocritus, Bridgehead, and Money Bird followed at intervals. Brilliant Late Challenge Finishing boldly from well back, Saxonia swamped the opposition for finishing speed in the Claremont Hack Handicap. He won going away from Happy Hunter by a head after the latter had opened up a handy lead just inside the furlong. Thisbe, Friar Phillip, and Neptune’s Daughter were slowest to move. What Next reaching the front near the five furlongs, where he was followed by Lilli Marlene, Exchange, Social News, Penze, Entrancing. Happy Hunter, and Silver Chase, with Humdinger handiest of the others. What Next held a clear lead at the straight entrance from Happy Hunter, Silver Chase, Entrancing, Lilli Marlene, Exchange, anct Social News, with Saxonia fast improving his position. What Next soon faded, leaving Happy Hunter clear. Saxonia's brilliant finishing burst gave him a win* in the last stride. Entrancing was half a length back third, and a length clear of the tiring What Next Humdinger, Social News, Exchange, Penze, and Fyxen were next to finish, and they were followed by Open Range. Dinnyhazer Surprises The little-fancied Dinnyhazer finished fast in the middle of the track to win the Kingsdown Hack Handicap decisively from Salmarie, with the consistent Lady Guillotine a head back third. The favourite Boost was backing out at barrier rise. Top Class, Zarcon, and Sally O were slowest of the others to move. Night Ruler and Lady Guillotine started smartly from the inside positions, and after a furlong they were three lengths clear of Dinnyhazer, Paper Raid, Beau Esprit, Probrim, Salmarie, Cogitation, Enforce, Mr Speaker, and Sally O. There were few changes in the running to the straight, but soon after straightening up, Lady Guillotine had Night Ruler’s measure. Salmarie and then Dinnyhazer challenged, the latter finishing best wide out to win decisively. Salmarie just shaded Lady Guillotine lor second. Home Circle made up ground for fourth ahead of Night Ruler, Mr Speaker, Zarcon, and Beau Esprit, with a gap to Boost.
