MEETING AT WASHDYKE

RACING

ORTHODOX SCORES GOOD WIN VETERAN, WHITLEY, WINS SPRINT EASILY Orthodox embellished a consistent but unlucky record with a decisive win in the Elloughton Handicap, the principal event at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting at Washdyke on Saturday. The Sir Galloway gelding’s performance bore the hallmark of excellence. He was squeezed for room when challenging in the straight, but he gamely forced his way through. After getting clear he quickly had the race in safe keeping, beating Terminate by half a length, with the little-fancied Clyde Bridge a length back third, and a head in front of the Invercargill candidate Great Bid. Money Lender finished solidly for fifth after being Checked near the home turn. Orthodox’s owner, Mr C. G. Mountney, became the first holder of a challenge cup, presented by members of the family of the late Mr Donald Grant, who was president of the club for 17 years. The cup will be competed for annually. Orthodox is trained at Washdyke by W. A. Welton, who also prepared Saxonia, which won the Claremont Hack Handicap in brilliant fashion. Consistency was again rewarded in the Seadown Handicap when the nine-year-old Theid gelding Whitley easily took the honours after forcing all the pace. The doubles combination, OrthodoxWhitley, returned £22 8s for £l. Eight of the 12 starters in the Pareora Hack Steeplechase failed to complete the course, but the other four staged a highly interesting tussle for the major honours. Sphere carried his top-weight of 11-5 to a good win from another Washdyke candidate in Cloister, which may have won but for being checked by fallen horses with a round to go. The favourite, Periwig, was a close third ahead of Light Tea. Four steeplechase jockeys were injured, but none of them seriously. H. J. Ford, rider of Feola, was taken to hospital suffering from concussion, but was discharged soon after. B. J. Langford, rider of Liquidate, which crashed heavily at the second of the stand doubles, suffered cuts on the back of his head. D. Arney, rider of On Broadway, suffered a bruised shoulder, and M. J. McClintock injured a foot when Dark Game fell. Dark Game broke a leg in his fall and was destroyed. He was an aged gelding by Cardsharper from Resort, trained at Riccarton by G. S. Barr for Mr A. B. Fechney. M. G. Murray suffered a broken collar bone when Wee Mac fell in the Tekapo Hurdles. The meeting was held in fine weather and before a good attendance. The track was dead after rain earlier in the week. The totalisator handled £37,712, including £3104 10s in doubles betting, compared with £36,708 last year. Elloughton Handicap Orthodox improved on some consistent placed performances with a convincing win in the Elloughton Handicap. The Sir Galloway gelding was squeezed for room when challenging near the half furlong but he gamely bullocked his way through and won going away by half a length from Terminate, with the little-fancied Clyde Bridge just heading Great Bid for third. Saieda, Clyde Bridge, and Cipher led past the stands from Western Front, Responsive, Orthodox, Pacific Edition. Terminate, and Great Bid. At the mile Cipher was showing clear from Saieda and Clyde Bridge together, Responsive, Western Front. Terminate, Pacific Edition, Orthodox and Great Bid, Frances. Money Lender. Conclusion, Personality and Valley Gold. Saieda was almost on terms with Cipher at the five furlongs, handiest of the others being Western Front, Clyde Bridge, Great Bid. Responsive, Terminate, Orthodox, Grand Pal, and Frances. Great Bid and Indiana improved their positions from the half mile to follow Saieda and Cipher into the straight. Clyde Terminate, and Orthodox challenged near the furlong, and they filled the first three places. Orthodox finishing too well for the others. Great Bid was a close fourth, and was followed home by Money Lender, Elofa, Responsive, Saieda. Frances, Personality, Conclusion, and Western Front. Seadown Handicap Whitley, the veteran of the field, clearly showed his superiority among the sprinters in the Seadown Handicap. Aftej starting with his usual brilliance, he led throughout, and won effortlessly by a length and a half from Bayfort, which just shaded the fast-finishing Prince Defaulter. Bonnv Roval lost several lengths at the start, Faites vos Jeux and Flying Fort also being slow to move. Whitley was followed past the five furlongs by Connaught. Lexia. Gold King, Prince Defaulter. Trident, Winning Gem, Zorro, and Haughty Dick. Gold King, Zorro, and Bayfort followed Whitley into the straight, but they never got within challenging distance of the topweight. Bayfort just held off the fast-finishing Prince Defaulter for second. Gold King was weakening in fourth place a neck away, and next to finish were Winning Gem, Lexia, Zorro. Haughty Dick, and Salma Royal. Pareora Steeples Eight horses failed to complete the course in the Pareora Hack Steeplechase but the other four, Sphere, Cloister, Periwig, and Light Tea provided a keen finish. , x Kildare Lad lost his rider at the first fence, and Feola led over the stand double from Liquidate. On Broadway, Blanket, Light Tea, Sphere, Dark Game, and Periwig, with Boy Friend and Cloister further back. Feola and On Broadway led over the fence near the seven furlongs five lengths clear of Liquidate, with two lengths to Light Tea and two lengths to Blanket. Then came Dark Game, which made a bad jump. Dark Game had his fatal fall at the fence near the four and a half furlongs. There were further casualties at the second of the stand double. Liquidate somersaulted, and Feola and Boy Friend, which were following, also came down. Bonnie

Game was then pulled up. On Broadway was left clear at the mile, three lengths clear of Light Tea, with two lengths to Periwig and Sphere, then four lengths to Cloister, and six lengths to Blanket. n 41 On Broadway fell at the fence near the four and a half furlongs, and Light Tea and Sphere were left in front of Periwig, with a gap of four lengths to Cloister. There was little between Light Tea, Sphere, and Periwig at the last fence. Sphere shook off Periwig’s challenge just inside the furlong, and the latter lost second place to a late challenge from Cloister. Light Tea was a length back fourth. Blanket was pulled up.
