SEAMAN’S BODY FOUND

MAN MISSING FROM OVERSEAS SHIP

The body of Michael Monogan, aged 28, a member of the cr£w of the overseas vessel Defoe, who fell over the side into the harbour when returning to his ship on Saturday, April 29. was found in the dry dock at Lyttelton lest evening.

Mr Monogan, who came from Liverpool, went up the gangway of his ship about 6.15 p.m. on April 29, and as he reached the deck he appeared to fall backwards and went over the side. Two ship's cadets went to his assistance, but he fell between the ship’s side snd the wharf, when they were unable to hold him.

A search was organised immediately and members of the Lyttelton Police Force searched for two hours without success. Members of the crew also dived in to try to find the body.
