DR. HEWLETT JOHNSON

“ SINGULARLY FOOLISH PERSON ” COMMENT BY MR MENZIES (Rec. 9 p.m.) CANBERRA. April 21. The Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) in the House of Representatives to-day described the Dean of Canterbury (Dr. Hewlett Johnson) as a “singularly foolish person.” Mr Menzies said he thought the greatest misfortune attending Dr. Johnson’s visit to Australia was the amount of publicity he had .received. Mr Menzies had been asked if he had seen a report that Dr. Johnson had advocated handing over northern Australia to the Chinese and people like the Japanese. Replying, he said that he had noted the views attributed to the Dean. They were completely in line with those the Dean had expressed from as far back as 1934 and 1935.
