HOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE
NINE-YEAR-OLD BOY RESCUED
A nine-year-old boy, suffering from the effects of smoke, was rescued through a window of a four-roomed cottage destroyed by fire at the Ministry of Works camp at Winchmore, near Ashburton, late on Thursday evening. Two men at the camp, Messrs C. A. Thornley and L. Green, saw the boy by the window, and broke in to save him.
The fire, the cause of which is not known, was noticed shortly before 10 p.m., and the fire-fighting unit of the Ashburton County Council answered the call at 10.20 o’clock. Nothing could be done except to prevent the outbreak from spreading to the line of cottages in which the burning building was situated. The fire-fighters were aided by an easterly wind. All furnishings and belongings inside the building were destroyed and the only articles saved were a lawnmower and a bicycle. The occupiers of the cottage and the parents of the rescued boy are Mr J. Telfer and Mrs Telfer.
