When it was left unattended on a siding at the Greymouth locomotive sheds to-day. a railway engine began to move slowly forward and after a short run nose-dived gently into the turntable pit. The pit is five feet deep and the engine remained finely balanced on the edge with its cowcatcher almost touching the bottom and its tender high in the air. A railwayman who saw the locomotive moving jumped into the cab in an attempt to put it into reverse He was still in the cab when the engine overran the edge of the pit. Had the engine not remained balanced on the edge it could have been damaged and its removal would have been a big job. Jacks were used to lever up the nose of the locomotive and another engine attached at the rear steamed ahead to ease it back on to the rails. The work of restoring the locomotive took just over one hour.
Two engines which had just completed their runs from Otira had to be sent 25 miles to Hokitika to use the turntable there so that they could take over the evening services.
