TUNNEL ROAD PROJECTS
MANUFACTURERS’ SUPPORT Emphatic support for the Lyttelton tunnel road project was given by the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association last evening when it reaffirmed the appointment of its president (Mr T. H. Lawn) and Mr C. S. Peate to represent it on the Tunnel Road Promotion Committee. There were labour difficulties today, but if the people of Canterbury stood together and asked that a fair share of the limited labour available should be allocated to the project, the committee would be able to achieve something, said Mr Lawn. He would like to see the Lyttelton Harbour Board make more progress with its plans for improving the Barbour. .Mr E. T. Beaven, who suggested that the council should support the project, said that next to the completion of Harewood airport and hydro-electric schemes the tunnel road should have the highest priority. Other members did not agree, as they considered that there were other works needed in Canterbury which should not be shelved even for -the tunnel road. Rather, the tunnel road should go ahead with other necessary projects such as a new railway station. “It would be wrong for us to fall into the tra P set b -V the Minister of Works (Mr W. S. Goosman) and nominate priorities,” said Mr A. M. Hollander. “We must just get behind the project and its urgency.”
