TWO MEN MISSING
WASHED OFF ROCKS INTO SEA (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, April 2. Two married men are presumed to have lost their lives on Saturday morning when they were washed off the rocks into the sea at “The Brothers,” near Waikawa. They were: James W. Spain, and Joseph Garfield Smith, both of whom were employees of the Niagara Sawmilling Company. The two men, who were skilled .bushmen, had done a considerable amount of fishing in the locality. Up till early on Sunday night their bodies had not been recovered. VAN LEAVES ROAD BOY KILLED INSTANTLY From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, April 2. Richard Murray Chant, aged 12, a son of Mr and Mrs A. R. Chant, of Wataroa, was killed instantly when a butcher’s delivery van, in which he was a passenger, left the highway yesterday, about two miles south of Wataroa. The driver of the vehicle, Eric Thompson, of Wataroa, escaped injury. The van was returning from Okarito Forks to Wataroa and left the road at a slight bend. It travelled down a low bank and was completely wrecked. It is indicated that the boy was thrown clear and was then struck by the vehicle, which somersaulted. An inquest was opened and adjourned after evidence of identification had been given. CYCLIST INJURED When the bicycle he was riding was involved in a collision with a car in Hawthorne road about 12.15 a.m. yesterday, Mr Pat Condon, of 76 Thackeray street, suffered a fractured elbow and leg lacerations. He was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital, where his condition last evening was reported as satisfactory.
