CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

JUSTICES WITHDRAW REMIT A remit urging the retention of the existing law abolishing capital punishment was withdrawn at the annual conference of the Federation of New Zealand Justices’ Associations yesterday. The remit asked that a person found guilty of murder should be sentenced to imprisonment for life and that the law should be amended to preclude any remission of such a sentence. z The Wanganui delegate (Mr L. A. Mclntosh) said his association considered that a sentence of imprisonment until death occurred would be a greater deterrent than capital punishment.

The remit was withdrawn because new legislation is likely to be brought forward by the Government.
