DEVELOPMENT OF HORTICULTURE

HISTORY IN CANTERBURY TO BE PUBLISHED A history of the development of horticulture in Canterbury during the last century is to be published by the Canetrbury Horticultural Society. This was decided last evening at a meeting of the society’s management committee. The publication is to be edited by Mr A. G. Henderson. Mr M. J. Barnett, in outlining the scheme to the meeting, said that such a history would be of interest to all those interested in horticulture. He appealed to members, and to the public, to submit any relevant information they might have to either himself or the society’s secretary (Mr P. C. Browne). To mark the centennial celebrations the society decided to open its garden competition to all competitors. The committee considered that as many people would be visiting Christchurch for the celebrations, an unrestricted competition would stimulate interest and many people would endeavour to show the best garden possible. The winners of each section of the competitions would be awarded a bronze centennial medal. As hill gardens were being affected by north-west winds towards the end of October each year, the committee decided to advance the date of judging the hill gardens competition by a fortnight
