DISQUALIFICATION OF PETTIE
AUSTRALIAN COMMENT (Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY. February 5 In a message from Auckland appearing in the “Sunday Herald.” Frank Tierne says: “The jury of appeal at Eden Park showed weakness, in listening to the pleadings of the Canadian runner, Don Pettie, who should have been disqualified from the final of the 100 yards sprint. Pettie had been responsible for the false starts and was ordered from the track by the starter. For more than an hour the jury tried to make up its mind whether it would strongly and properly support the starter. Had the jury acted promptly, its deliberations could not be criticised.”
In the “Sunday Telegraph” Geofl Allen quotes Pettie as claiming that the dispute cost him the title. However. the Australian runner. A. Gordon, believed that the race should have started without Pettie and said that but for being upset John Treloar might have run 9.ssec.
