LADIES’ GUILD
More than 20 new members have joined the Christchurch Ladies’ Guild of the British Sailors’ Society within the last few weeks, all at the invitation of a young friend of one member of the committee. This was announced at a meeting of the committee held yesterday when the president (Mrs G. W. C. Smithson), who presided, asked each member to enroll as many .new members as possible, as 1950 promised to be a busy year for the guild. It was announced that a social gathering would be held at the Seamen’s Institute, Lyttelton, on February 23, when Mr A. W. Mitchell, general secretary of the British Sailors’ Society in New Zealand, and Mrs Mitchell would be present. Preliminary arrangements were made for tbe guild’s produce sale to be held in. Cathedral square at the end of March and for the annual meeting to be held early in April. It was decided to send the quarterly quota of £25 to the Board qf Directors of the Seamen’s Institute. Members agreed to help in the street collection for the Tuberculosis Association on February 15 and for the Navy League on March 1. Reports of visits paid to seamen in the Christchurch Hospital and Cashmere Sanatorium were given by the guild’s visitors. It was reported that Mrs Ynyr Robinson had undertaken to visit seamen in the Christchurch Hospital during the absence in England of Miss Monica Cocks, who has carried out this work for some time. It was announced that 100 books and donations amounting to £2O had been received at an afternoon party held in November at the home of Dr. and Mrs L. MacDougall, Rossall street.
