TRAINING FOR PEACE ?

Sir, —Science is a minute and finite area explored by knowledge, compared with the infinite area of our ignorance. We employ science fruitfully in many fields, particularly in the preparation of men, mentally, morally and materially for war. Now every mode of expression is in full blast, putting the heat into hate; industry is stock-piling the essentials to putting hate into action, and science is absorbed in improving facilities for that action. Possibly it requires more courage than is available in men or women to enter that unexplored moral area called peace in the face of the conventional, all-embracing support for war. Still, without being disrespectful to the God most universally worshipped—Mars—peace really deserves some attention from science, if only to allay our curiosity. What is it?—Yours, etc., H. J. BUTTLE. Darfield, February 4, 1950.
