Ridden by K E. Wilson, he galloped to the front early in the race and was never asked to reach his best speed. That was his only appearance at the cup meeting, but with two wins in mile welters at the Southland Racing Club’s New Year meeting, he completed the hat-trick. Jamell is a brother to Fine Night, their dam being Palantua, winner of the New Zealand Cup in 1933. Palantua, .which died last year, is also dam of Peel Tower, which has left the brilliant galloper Royal Tower, winner of the James Hazlett Gold Cup at Wingatui in December. RJoyal Tower was a novice at the time. Trench Fray’s Form Trench Fray scored his third win of the season, and the fifth of his career, in the Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. After running a good fifth- in the New Zealand Derby and fourth in the Stonyhurst Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting, he scored his first win in open company in the Stewards’ Handicap, one mile, on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting in December. He was unluckily beaten at his next start, in the Waikouaiti Cup, finishing third after losing a lot of ground at the start.

He started twice at the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting, but each time he lost his chance by dwelling at the start.

On Saturday he made up his ground from the middle of the field after passing the half-mile and, after reaching the front, ran on gamely to beat the fasterfinishing Fine Night by a neck. Unlucky

Fine Night has raced well but with little luck on his visits to Riccarton. In the Midsummer Handicap a year ago he was runner-up to The Grate and was beaten by a neck. Brought back from Wingatui for the C.J.C. autumn meeting, he finished third in the Great Autumn Handicap to Frances and Tuatea, separated from the winner by two half-heads. On the third day of the meeting Excellency, with a brilliant late run, beat him by a head in the Sockburn Handicap. He finished sixth in the New Zealand Cup last November, and on the second day another Wingatui candidate, Bobby

Dazzler, beat him by a head in the Metropolitan Handicap. Fine Night would have required little more luck in his races to have amassed a bigger total of stake winnings. Bold Galloper Great Way galloped boldly in front PracticaHy all the way to win the Trial stakes easily at Riccarton on Saturday. It was his fifth appearance in a race and his previous outings had produced two seconds and a fourth. Raced by his breeder, Mr F. M. Costello, and trained at Halswell by C. Davey, Great Way belongs to the Madowla branch of the Azalea family. His dam is Great Flight, which was bred by the late Sir Charles Clifford. Great Flight was Bot Magnus from Swoopalong, by March Along from Brown Owl, by Treadmill from Glenowlet, by Clanranald from Madowla. Brown Owl was a New Zealand Oaks winner and Glenowlet was one of several members of this family to win the Dunedin Champagne Stakes. The best member of this family was Wild Chase, which won the New Zealand Derby,. Canterbury Cup, New Zealand St. Leger, Dunedin Cup, and Awapuni Gold Cup as a three-year-old. Also from this family was Immediate, which won the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton and the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie. He later raced in Australia. Racing Consistently Kosher should be an interesting newcomer to open handicaps this season. The Beaulivre four-year-old has been racing consistently for the Dunedin owner, Mr G. J. Barton, and he was one of the bestperformed hacks at the recent summer meeting at Trentham.

After five unplaced pei*formances earlier in the season, Kosher scored a surprise win over eight and a half furlongs at the Wyndham Racing Club's meeting on January 2. Then followed a fourth at Invercargill before he was taken to Trentham. On the first day of the meeting he was beaten by the Invercargill-trained Night Rider in the Ruapehu Hack Handicap. Night Rider was missing from the field for the Camp Hack Handicap on the second day, and Kosher, well ridden by J. G. Pankhurst, son of the trainer, finished solidly for a clear-cut win. That was young Pankhurst’s first ride in a race. Another solid finishing run marked Kosher’s appearance in the Kelburn Hack Handicap on the third at Trentham but he could not overhaul a smart galloper in Almora, which was completing a double for the meeting.

Kosher is the fourth produce of the Rabbi mare, Jewish Girl, and belongs to the famous Steppe family, which has produced some high-class stayers, including Rapier, Lord Chancellor, and Happy Ending.
