Scientist Charged Under British Secrets Act

The British authorities, in collaboration with the American Federal Bureau of Investigation, have arrested a key scientist of the British atomic research establishment at Harwell, Berkshire. The man is alleged to have been responsible for leakages of atomic information to Russia. The scientist, Klaus Emil Julius Fuchs, aged 38, who is of German origin, came to Britain in 1933, was naturalised in 1942, and worked on secret British and American atomic projects during the war.
Fuchs was charged in the Bow Street Magistrate’s Court to-day with betraying atomic secrets likely to be useful to an enemy. Fuchs was remanded in custody until February 10 on two charges under the Official Secrets Act. In Washington, the announcement of the charges against Fuchs caused serious concern. President Truman discussed the ' implications of the arrest at a meeting of the United States Cabinet to-day.
