HARVEY REACHES 1000 RUNS FOR TOUR (Rec. 10 p.m.) CAPE TOWN, Feb. 4. Australian, wickets fell surprisingly fast against North-East Transvaal at Pretoria to-day. The wicket was good and bowlers extracted some nip from it. Harvey, with a bright 41, reached 1002 runs scored in first-class matches on this tour. He is the first of the Australians to do so. lan Johnson, with a fine knock, was the main factor in steadying the Australian innings after a slump. Bad light brought abeut an early stoppage after North-East Transvaal’s early collapse. Australia’s total of 338 was made in 237 minutes. SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH
BRISBANE, .February 4. In a Sheffield Shield match Queensland failed to overtake Victoria’s lead on the first innings, but Victoria began poorly in the second, losing three wickets cheaply. For Queensland Tallon went in to bat when the side had lost six Jor 156 and added 84 for a ninth wicket stand.
Queensland in the first innings made 254 (Jack 66, Tallon not out 58, Chapman 30). Iverson took three for 53 and Ring three for 72. Victoria in the first innings made 300, and in the second had lost three for 35.
Strike Called im Naples.— The Com-munist-led Italian Labour Confederation called a 24-hour general strike in Naples from midnight to-night after riots in which 19 persons were injured. Unemployed demonstrators clashed with police in several parts of the city during the day.—Rome, February 4.
