YOUNG MAN KILLED MOTORCYCLES COLLIDE AT KAIAPOI After a collision between two motorcycles at Kaiapoi on Saturday evening, a young Christchurch man died while on the way to the Christchurch Public Hospital. He was: Raymond Hunt, a moulder, aged 22 years, of 408 St. Asaph street, Christchurch. The motor-cycles, one of which was ridden by Mr Hunt, and the other by William Summerton, of Queen street, Islington, collided on the Main North road just north of Kaiapoi, where Smith street and Beach road meet the main road, about 8 p.m. Mr Hunt was taken to hospital with a suspected fracture of the skull, but was found to be dead on arrival. Michael O’Loughlin, of 20 Torrens road, Riccarton, who was on the bac v of Mr Hunt’s motor-cycle, after treatment a& the orthopaedic department at the Hospital. was able to go home. Stanley Bremner. of 18 Conference street, Christchurch, who was the pillion rider on Summerton’s motor-cycle, was admitted to hospital with head injuries. His condition was reported yesterday to be fairly satisfactory. Summerton was not injured. An inquest will be opened this morning before the Corbner (Mr Raymond Ferner).

TWO CHILDREN DROWNED

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February Ik Two Maori children were drowned in a channel in the upper reaches of the Tauranga harbour on Saturday. They were: Te Manea Ngati, an eight-year-old bpy, of Matapihi, and Puarangi Paki, a nine-year-old girl, of Matapihi. The two children were bathing together in a channel near Matapihi, about seven miles from Mount Maunganui, and went out of their depth. Several Maori children who were in the channel saw the girl disappear but did not notice that the boy was also missing. Some of the children ran half a mile to the home of the girl’s father t for help. Several men then began to drag the channel with a fishing net ana the body of the girl was recovered about an hour after the drowning. The boy’s body was recovered later. The mother of the boy is a widow.

YOUNG MAN DROWNED

(New Zealand Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 5. A young man was drowned while swimming at Hunua Falls on Saturday afternoon. He was: John Chisholm Kirk, aged 23, a son of Mrs Hugh Kirk, of Papakura. Kirk was swimming below the Hunua Falls and attempted to get to the opposite bank, a distance of about 50 yards. According to two men who witnessed the accident Kirk had almost reached the bank when he stopped and appeared to be resting. He called out, but because of the noise of the falls could not be understood. He then disappeared. Two men immediately went to his assistance, but no trace of his body could be found.

SPEEDWAY RIDER INJURED

B. Norriss, a Christchurch speedway rider, escaped serious injury when he fell in the first heat of the Christchurch Handicap on Saturday evening and the footrest of R. Wigg’a motor-cycle pierced his crash helmet about an inch above his ear. Norriss. who is aged 22 and lives at 32 Medway street. North Richmond, was taken by St. John Ambulance to the Christchurch Public Hospital suffering from concussion and head injuries. His condition last evening wal satisfactory.

CAR STRUCK BY TRAIN

LEVEL CROSSING AT ASHBURTON A- motor-car was struck by the Christchurch-Timaru excursion traW at the Moore street level railwtf crossing at Ashburton about 10.30 a.m. yesterday. The driver of the cat. Miss Rona Beckley, of Ashburton, and Mr R. A. Burnett, of Ashburton, the owner of the car. who was a passenger got clear before the impact. The car. which was new, stopped ’y,th its front wheels on the railway Ime. but the train was moving slowly. I* struck the car at the front wheel! and pushed it off the rails.
