MILITARY TRAINING SCHEME

NORTH ISLAND MEN MAY GO TO BURNHAM

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 5. It may be found necessary for some North Island recruits under the compulsory military training scheme to enter Burnham camp. This, however, will depend to some extent on the total number of men who are ready to enter camp at the commencement of the training scheme. “Now that the decision has been made not to proceed with new bar-rack-room buildings at Linton, obvious alternatives suggest themselves,’’ said the Minister of Defence (Mr T. L. Macdonald) on Saturday. “It was, of course, intended to make use of the Pahiatua camp at any rate. The proposed barrack-room buildings at Linton would have given only half of the accommodation required for a fullsized intake. There is, I understand, already accommodation at Linton for some 300 men.” If there were an overflow over and above the accommodation available at Linton and Pahiatua. the question arose as t»> whether some should not be sent to Burnham, which was to be the South Island training camp, said Mr Macdona 1 d. Some of the North Islanders might have to be sent there and if so there would be no difficulty about the 5 r accommodation.
