DISPLACED PERSONS FROM EUROPE

N.Z.’ MAY ACCEPT ANOTHER GROUP

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 5. The possibility of New Zealand accepting a further group of displaced persons from Europe is to be investigated by the Government. land has already taken 941 displaced persons. A suggestion that. New Zealand should taka another group of these persons was made to the Government yesterday by the Deputy-Direbtor-Generai of the International Refugee Organisation (Sir Arthur Ruckers) and by Msjor-General Lloyd, who is the regional representative in tlie South Pacific. Their representations were received by the Minister of Immigration (Mr W. Sullivan), the Minister of External Affairs (Mr F. W. Doidge), and the Post-master-General (Mr W. J. Broadfeot). Mr Sullivan said last evening that the general work of the International Refugee Organisation was also discussed. An undertaking had been given that a report would be obtained on the r possibility of New Zealand taking a further group of displaced persons, and this would be submitted to Cabinet. New Zealand wanted chiefly tradesmen, farm workers, domestics and hospital workers. Every country seemed to realise it should do something to absorb these displaced persons and there were still roughly 400,000 of them in Europe.
