INDIAN GIRLS’ VISIT TO N.Z.
HAPPIEST WEEK SPENT IN CHRISTCHURCH
“We have had three memorable experiences: our first sight of a glacier and the thrill of climbing one; the weird, uncanny experience of Rotorua, where the fiery heart of the earth pulsates at the very surface and gives one furiously to think; and the moment of utter peace and quiet in the glowworm cave at Waitomo! These three experiences alone were worth the trouble of travelling the thousands of miles from India,” wrots two Indian girls, Misses Mary Fonseca and Lilian Robertson, in a letter received in Christchurch yesterday. “Scenery alone does not make a country lovable. We have found New Zealanders everywhere kindly and well spoken, but most of all in the South Island, where we found persons of solid parts, of culture, of learning, and kind hearts.
“We found Dunedin and Nelson charming towns. We met there many very hospitable and friendly persons, but we have lost our hearts to Christchurch, where we spent the happiest week of our tour by the river Avon.
“We would like to say a sincere ‘thank you’ to all who went out of their way to show us round and who were more than kind, some whose names we do not even know, but whose friendly gestures have made'a deep impression on us.”
