FACTORY WORK FOR GIRLS
MANY VACANCIES IN CHRISTCHURCH There is still plenty of factory work in Christchurch for girls who left school at the end of the year. Most firms employing a large number of women operatives are short of staff, although one or two have a waiting list for particular positions. Generally, the position this year is no better than it was at the same time last year. Some factories believe that they will get more applicants when the school holidays end, as some girls wish to take their last long holiday in full before starting work, but most of those who left school at the end of last year to begin work were awake to the chance of earning holiday money and began work before factories closed for the statutory holidays.
Factory workers these days are offered cafeteria services, bonuses, and “music while they work,” but some manufacturers think that retail shop work is appealing more to girls, especially as shop assistants have received three wage increases within the last 12 months.
Most factories have found it easier to get boys this jear than it was last year.
