CAR PARKING
Sir, —In your issue of even date there is a report of a discussion at the Manufacturers’ Association. As a resident of many years and a motorist, I wish to endorse the remarks of Mr Urlwin. Yesterday I counted 15 cars, plus a motor-cycle, parked for hours at the United Tennis Club grounds, just past the sign parking prohibited. There were plenty of facilities between the signs. At Oxford terrace, between Colombo arid Manchester street, there is a time limit; yet business»vans and motor-cars are parked from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., 2 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. A similar example may be found in Manchester street, Hereford street, and Papanui road, where parking is prohibited between 4.30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Yestreday, between these hours, there were 15 private cars parked. Likewise, from Worcester street to Montreal street, a similar posititon. Why all the additional expense? Is it the joke of 1950? —Yours, etc., * FAIR PLAY. January 26, 1950. [“There is no prohibited parking notice on Riccarton avenue near the United Tennis Club’s grounds,” said the Chief Traffic Inspector to the Christchurch City Council (Mr G. P. Kellar), when this letter was referred to him. “It is admitted that there are time limits at the points mentioned by the correspondent, and as opportunity offers these places are checked; but it is impossible to do it regularly with the staff available at the moment. Should the correspondent care to call on me I would explain the matter more fully to him,” Mr Kellar added. The Director of Parks and Reserves (Mr M. J. Barnett) had no comment to make.]
