BANK CLEARINGS IN U.S.

HIGHEST LEVEL SINCE 1929 (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 22. Bank clearings in 25 leading cities for the week ended December 21 climbed to the highest level since October 31, 1929, when the stock market collapsed. Clearings for the week totalled 17,253 million dollars, compared with 15,997 million dollars in the corresponding week of 1948, and 20,725 milion dollars in the week in 1929.
