BRITAIN’S ECONOMIC RECOVERY

Employers Pledge Aid To Government STABILISING WAGES AND INCREASING OUTPUT (New Zealand Press Association) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, December 22. British employers yesterday pledged their full support to the Government in dealing with the country’s economic and financial difficulties. This was the outcome of a meeting in London of the Foreign Secretary (Mr Ernest Bevin), the Minister of Labour (Mr George Isaacs), and representatives of the British Employers’ Confederation. A statement issued after the meeting said that Mr Bevin had asked for the co-operation of employers in the necessary effort to stabilise wages and increase production. Sir Greville Maginess, on behalf of the confederation, had assured Mr Bevin of the employers’ full support. The confederation embraces all the main British employers’ associations.

Mr Bevin’s conference with the ] Employers’ Confederation representa- • fives was the first of three important ' meetings yesterday to discuss plans to aid Britain’s production drive. The main topic at the meeting with the confederation was the manner in which fresh incentives could be given to workers and employers. At the second meeting the general council of the Trades Union Congress, representing 8,000,000 workers, ap-

proved a full statement on the wages policy which will be discussed by the executive of the T.U.C. at a private conference on January 12. At the third meeting trade union leaders and representatives of the Employers’Confederation met as the Joint Consultative Committee which advises the Labour Minister on policy. They discussed hours of work in relation to output, and agreed that it was essentially a question to be settled industry by industry.
