GOVERNMENT IN PEIPING
BRITISH RECOGNITION PREDICTED
LONDON, Dec. 21. “The British Government will definitely accord full de jure recognition to the Chinese Communist Government during the first week of January,” says the diplomatic correspondent of the “Evening News.” “It is hoped that the other Commonwealth countries will accord recognition at the same time as Britain, but if it should not prove possible to obtain simultaneous recognition, the British Government will, nevertheless adhere to the date already decided upon. “The British Cabinet fully supports the view of the Foreign Secretary (Mr Ernest Bevin) that both for political and commercial reasons the advantages of not delaying recognition outweigh the disadvantages.” The Foreign Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly to-day rejected by 22 votes to 14 a Communist resolution asking for immediate French recognition of the Chinese People’s Republic.
