SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE TOLLS
PROBABLE ELIMINATION (Rec. 11 p.m.) CANBERRA, Dec. 22. It is probable that, the toll charges on the Sydney Harbour Bridge maybe eliminated, if the Federal Government provides £410,000 a year from the petrol tax. The present Federal Ministers are stated to be far more sympathetic towards this proposal than was the Chiflcy Government. The petrol tax goes to the Federal Government, which makes grants to the States for road improvement. To-day, half the motor vehicle licences in New South Wales are owned by Sydnev residents, who are estimated to pay £3.000,000 a year in petrol tax. Stoppages on the bridge through the collection of tolls are alleged to result in the wastage of 350.000 gallons of petrol each year.
