VIOLENT STORM AT HASTINGS
FRUIT CROPS DAMAGED HAIL SIX INCHES DEEP ON GROUND (New Zealand Press Association.) __ „ HASTINGS, November 6. Hail accompanying a violent electrical storm smashed glasshouses and stripped fruit and other crops in a two-mile path in Hastings this afternoon. The main fruit area, however, escaped the hail. The storm cut a swathe across the eastern side of the town about 4 o'clock. The roofs of about two dozen large glasshouses were shattered bjj large jagged hailstones. Most of the crops were tomatoes which were just coming on the market. These were ruined. Outside growth was stripped by the force of the hail. Although the larger commercial fruitgrowing areas escaped, there were some extensive orchards in the path of the storm. The full damage to them cannot be assessed until the crops reach a more advanced stage. House roofs leaked as the spouting became choked by hail, and the interiors of many were damaged. At nightfall the hail on the ground was still six inches deep.
