MORE ORDERS FROM U.S.
BRITISH DRESS DESIGNERS
As a result of the devaluation of the pound Britain’s leading fashion houses h; ve received increased orders from New York, and designers are confident of a substantial increase in sales this season. Already several members of the Incorporated Society of London Fashion Designers have sent models in special sizes by aeroplane to be shown to American buyers on their own ground, says the New Zealand Wool Beard.
London suits, and particularly tweeds, have always won favour in the United States and the new season's light-weight tweeds and facecloths have met with a splendid reception. Designed to contrast with the huge heavy velour topcoats, these have all the warmth of heavier wool tweeds but drape and tailor perfectly. Typical of the models for which many repeat orders have been received Js a Digby Morton suit in feather-weight Donegal tweed in black and white. Its skirt is a modification of the kilt and gains freedom of movement from knife pleats which go three-quarters of the way round to finish in a straight panel at the front. Buyers have also shown warm approval for Dorville’s all-wool collection which combines elegance with wearabiltiv. Among the highlights are two evening gowns in a new lightweight wool jersey, one of which is in deep navy with cape sleeves and white wool braid outlining the front.
Keen interest has been expressed, too. in Bery’s utility range which will be able to compete with American mass-oroduced garments. In spite of the low cost, new . fashion points abound in this range, which includes some cardigan jacket suits with neck pockets topping skirts with straight fronts and loosely folded backs for five guineas.
