BRITISH WOOL PRODUCTION

GUARANTEED PRICE EXPECTED SCHEME SUBMITTED BY FARMERS LONDON, November 3. British sheepfarmers expect a guaranteed price for wool as from May, 1950. Under a wool marketing scheme recently submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture by the National Farmers’ Union, it is proposed that a guaranteed price for fleece wool each season, should be negotiated by the Farmers’ 1 Union every spring, and that the Government should guarantee this average price for all the wool clipped in that year, together with an allowance for marketing costs. Minimum prices would also be negotiated for fouryear periods. It is estimated that the annual value of United Kingdom wool is £6,000,000 at present prices. Parliamentary approval of the scheme has yet to be granted.
