FAMILY BUDGETS
ADVICE TO BRITISH HOUSEWIVES ADDRESS BY MR HERBERT • MORRISON (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, November 4. “Higher living standards and finer social services must be" earned,” said the Lord President of the Council (Mr Herbert Morrison), addressing a women's meeting in London. He suggested 10 different ways in which a wife could help the family budget, as follows: (1) “Encourage those who go out to work, to work with a will both for your family and for the wider family to which we all belong. (2) "Shop carefully. Make your money go as far as possible and put off buying for the time being, anything waich is not necessary. (3) “Beat unfair profit-makers by not buying from them. If they are breaking the law, report it. (4) “Watch” for good design, good service and good value and where vou see it, praise it. Where you find shoddiness. slackness, or over-charging or inefficiency, say so politely, but firmly. (5) "Remember that your opinion is the public opinion and public opinion is great and will prevail. (6) "Keep an eye on your fuel and lighting meters. If yoti can put a bit aside in your savings, even if it is only sixpence a week, do so.
(7) “Keep an eye like a hawk on all extravagance, especially in public services. People who get away with things like joy rides in Health Service ambulances and unnecessary prescriptions are robbing your family’s future standard of living. (8) "Make the home the best place to spend the evenings in—that’s sure to help the family budget. (9) “Organise both spending and working. Get everyone in your family to share both—see that any economies you make fall on everyone equally. (10) “Don’t try to shoulder the lot yourself. And keep smiling.” **
