BURST WATER MAIN AT CASHMERE
— STAFF WORK ALE NIGHT TO REPAIR BREAK After a four-inch water main burst at the Hackthorne road pumping station on Saturday morning, Heathcote County Council staff worked for the rpst of the day and throughout the night to repair the break, which was difficult to get at in a four-foot-deep hole. The break was repaired early on Sunday morning. Messages were broadcast on Saturday and Sunday requesting Cashmere residents not to water the’.r gardens, and to conserve water. The break did not cut any houses off, as it was in a rising main supplying water from the Ashgrovc terrace wells through <he Hackthorne road pumping station to the main reservoir. Repair w.ork was held up by the difficulty of welding in the hole; filled with wafer and sodden clay. Pumps had to be kept going all the time. The engineer -(Mr E. F. Johnson) said yesterday that no damage was done by the break, as the water from the burst main was turned down a side
channel, and there were no horn close by. The supply position was nt quite satisfactory, he said.
