BOXING
F. ENDICOTT WINS MATCH AT BLACKBALL From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, October 16. In the first professional boxing match staged on the West Coast for three years, Frank Endicott (list 21b), of Australia, beat Trevor Tonks (list 61b), of Timaru, on points at the end of the scheduled 10 rounds in the Miners’ Hall, Blackball, last evening. The hall was almost full, and the bout provided some lively boxing. One judge awarded the bout to Endicott, and the other favoured a draw. The referee. Mr F. O’Neill, gave the decision in favour of Endicott. There was a mild demonstration at the decision. Tonks appeared to have a chance of obtaining a knock-out in the ninth round, when he partly closed Endicott’s right eye with a good punch, but he was unable to follow up his advantage. Endicott rallied to take the tenth round well. There was little between the boxers, but Endicott was always more aggressive.
The amateur preliminaries resulted: A. Coutts beat K. Mahuika on points; G. Finlay beat D. McFadyen on points: P. Freer knocked out A. Schaffer in the -third round; M. Easton beat W. Meadowcroft on points; R. Dowling drew with M. Bowden; R. Collins beat B. Davy on points.
