INTERPROVINCIAL MATCH

GOLF

WELLINGTON BEATS CANTERBURY WOON AND JACKSON WIN EASILY For the second time on a strange course, the Wellington provincial golf team scored a convincing win over Canterbury at Waitikiri on Saturday. The Wellington team, at a distinct disadvantage. having travelled down the previous night, was not expected to beat. Canterbury on one of its home courses. The final result was 10J games to 7J, Wellington having a winning margin in both foursomes and singles. The Wellington players seemed to have no difficulty in judging distance. The weather was good. A light southerly wind made conditions pleasant in the morning, but a change to northerly for the beginning of the afternoon round created some difficulties for the visitors. However, the wind changed again to the south later in the afternoon. The Wellington players appeared quite at home on the excellent greens, which at present are undoubtedly better than on any previous occasion. If any fault was to be found with them it was that they were a little slow for the singles in the afternoon. This was possibly an advantage with shorter putts, as the ball could be struck firmly without any fear of its leaving the line. Some outstanding golf was played during the day. In the foursomes. C. J. Ward and J. L. Blair were round the course in scratch figures, only to be beaten by W. G. Horne and D. A. Stevens, who completed the course in 70. three strokes better than scratch. In this game Horne played some of the finest irons seen for some time. On three occasions, with long irons to the green, he finished within three feet of the hole. Beautifully flighted, these shots, perfectly judged for a stranger on the course, never at any stage varied from the line. Again in the afternoon, Horne played very well, and J. W. Jackson, the Waitikiri player, had a hard struggle before he finally beat Horne. Jackson trailed Horne for 12 holes before he could make any impression, and much praise is due to him for hanging on to a player such as Horne in an aggressive mood. Jackson was content to wait until the game began to move his way, and when it did at the twelfth. ,he went on to win that hole and the three following to decide the issue. Woon Beats Hornabrook D. L. Woon had little difficulty with J. P. Hornabrook in the leading singles. Woon was a much improved player on his performance in the North Canterbury championships, when he had much dificulty with hooked drives. Woon had altered his grip slightly, and it was obvious that he has had success with this variation. His drives were seldom off the line, and his shots to the green were well controlled. He hit two magnificent woods at the long thirteenth (550 yards) and finished 30 yards beyond the flag. Admittedly the wind was behind at this hole, but these two shots were nevertheless of outstanding length. Hornabrook was also driving well, and matched Woon for length, but his inability to find the greens with iron seconds invariably gave Wpon an advantage. Hornabrook was completely out of touch for the first three holes, and dropped three strokes to the scratch score. Woon three-putted the first green, otherwise he would have won all three. With a lead of two holes and another win with a birdie at the ninth. Woon held his lead and won comfortably at the sixteenth At the tenth hole, Woon required a putt of less than three feet for a win, but was stymied by Hornabrook's ball, which lay only two inches from the hole. Woon endeavoured to pitch in on the full, but the ball struck the back of the hole and returned in the direction from which it had come, striking Hornabrook's ball. The game finished in a very sporting manner at the sixteenth when Woon was dormie three. Hornabrook put his first drive out of bounds and followed it with another. After the second ball finished over tire fence he turned to Woon and conceded him the hole.

Ward, who played very well in the foursomes, did not have the same crispness in his shots when he played G. P. Roberts in the singles. Ward's round was approximately 80. Roberts was about three strokes better. M. R. Blank, in fourth place, was equally unimpressive, and was beaten by the stylish young Manor Park player, A. P. W. Church, 3 up and 2 to play.

Caldwell was no match for the small but extremely aggressive L. B. Quinn. Caldwell did not play badly, and was unlucky with several good iron seconds. The ball was not breaking for him. whereas Quinn holed several longish putts in the first half which gave him a substantial lead. Four down at the turn, Caldwell was unfortunate to lose the tenth. His drive there was pushed slightly and found a sand trap. He played a fine recovery which just trickled over the back of the green into a difficult position. This was a typical example of Caldwell's game.

J. B. Crawford, the player with the "wrong’’ grip, turned on some startling figures in the second half against Blair. Using a left-handed grip, but playing right-handed. Crawford hooks every shot he plays, in a completely unorthodox manner, and contrary to all general golf principles. Nevertheless Crawford recorded some excellent figures. In the second nine he scored three good birdies and an eagle 3 at the seventeenth to finish the game. Blair had plenty of opportunities in the first nine holes to establish a lead, and although he stood 1 up at the turn, his play on the whole was weak and indecisive.

E. G. Kerr (Timaru) in eighth place in the team, scored a good win over K. D. S. Smith, one of the three brothers in the Wellington team. Kerr was the only player in the Canterbury team, apart from the two leading players, to score a win both morning and afternoon.

J. Mitchell, the Waimate member of the team, was out of touch on the greens and three-putted the first four greens. He was beaten by C. A. S. Smith, who would have had no chance if Mitchell had been able to handle the greens.

H. J. Gosset played well to beat K. J. Stephen. He handled the conditions well, as did D. C. Watson, the last selected for the team. Watson was one stroke better than scratch when the game ended on the twelfth green, and he gave his opponent. W. C. Crisp, no chance at all. His convincing win fully justified his inclusion in the side. The Foursomes The leading foursomes game provided some good golf, both pairs, Woon and Jackson and Hornabrook and Roberts, completing the round in 73, scratch figures. The Canterbury pair held a slight advantage ‘throughout, and the match was squared at the fifteenth hole, where Roberts holed a long putt for a birdie. The Wellington pair won the sixteenth, and played the last hole dormie one. Here Hornabrook pushed his drive out. the ball finishing on a road running parallel to the hole. Playing the ball from where it lay on the gravel. Roberts picked it off well with' a number six iron, and the shot finished on the green. He was left with a four-footer to halve the hole and win the game, after Hornabrook’s approach putt, but he missed, the game being halved. In this game all four played well, their driving being particularly long and accurate. Caldwell and M. R. Blank also had a hard struggle with their opponents. Quinn and Crawford, both pairs being round in approximate 75’s Blank was shaky for a start, but after the sixth settled down, and proved himself a useful partner. He and Caldwell were 3 down after six holes. They also were 1 down playing the last hole, but Crawford's drive did not respond to the usual hook treatment, and the ball finished wide in some trees. The hole cost them a six and the game was halved. Results were as follows (Wellington names first):— Foursomes J. P. Hornabrook and G. P. Roberts halved with D. L. Woon and J. W. Jackson; W. G. Horne and D. A. Stevens beat C. J. Ward and J. L. Blair, 3 and 1; L. B. Quinn and J. B. Crawford halved with M. R. Blank and C. W. Caldwell; A. P. W. Church and K. J. S. Smith lost to A. R.
