(New Zealand Press Association.) WHANGAREI, October 15. Unless their claims for a new award are met to-day, members of the Portland Cement Workers’ Union will a 40-hour week with no overtime from midnight to-night. Their representatives delivered an ultimatum on these lines after it had been found impossible to reach agreement in conciliation at Whan gar ei yesterday. According to a representative of the workers, the unionists sought to obtain the same agreement under which the Golden Bay Cement Workers’ Union is operating. This involved claims for higher wages, and increased annual holidays for men who had completed six years’ continuous service. The employers made some concessions. but these were considered inadequate. They were then informed of the union s decision not to work overtime until the conditions obtaining at the Golden Bay works were applied.
