COMMISSION ON EDUCATION

MINISTER PREFERS COMMITTEES A Royal commission to review the whole system of education in the Dominion is still opposed by the Minister of Education (Mr T. H. McCombs). Such a proposition was made by the Dominion conference of the New Zealand Educational Institute (primary school teachers) in both 1948 and 1949. “I much prefer the setting up of consultative committees to deal with major problems in education.” Mr McCombs says in his latest reply to the institute. “This was done, as vou are aware, when the revision of the postprimarv curriculum was under consideration and the present system of teacher training is being examined in a similar way.”
