LINCOLN COLLEGE GLASSHOUSES
ORIGINAL ESTIMATE “ HORRIFYING ” For a number of years, Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, has been trying to have glasshouses erected at the college, because without them the increasingly important horticultural instruction given by the college has been seriously handicapped. The glasshouses required were estimated by the Public Works Department to cost a little less than £12.000. but the college staff estimates that the work can now be done for about £4600. in reporting to the Board of Governors yesterday, the director. Professor E. R. Hudson, said that the Government estimate was prepared as part of the estimates made for the big building scheme. “The estimate of nearly £12.000 was just a little horrifying,” he said. “Apparently, the Education Department found it horrifying. too. because it refused to go on with the building.” The college had set aside a reserve for building glasshouses. which at one time amounted to £l5OO. but purchases of equipment brought the amount available down to about £6OO. The engineering staff es’imated that by using the college maintenance staff, the glasshouses could be built for about £4600. which, with the £6OO in hand, could be covered by a grant of £4OOO. Professor Hudson said that with the new staff accommodation, it was proposed to have permanently on the college staff carpenters for maintenance work. "I agree that it is quite essential to have carpenters on the staff.” said the chairman. Mr C. T. Aschman. “It is absurd having to call tenders for every piece of miscellaneous work we have to do.” I* was agreed to apply for a grant of £4OOO.
