FINES IMPOSED ON UNIONS

REMISSION REFUSED BY COURT (Rec. 10 p.m.) MELBOURNE, September 23. Fines amounting to £5OOO imposed on three major Australian unions for contempt of the Arbitration Court during the recent coal strike, will not be remitted. This was the unanimous decision of the Full Bench of the Arbitration Court, which to-day issued its reserved judgment on claims for the remission of the fines. The Miners’ Federation had been fined £2OOO, the Waterside Workers’ Federation £2OOO, and the Federated Ironworkers’ Association £ 1000. The Chief Judge (Mr Justice Kelly). Mr Justice Kirby, and Mr Justice Dunphy said that no grounds could be found for discharging the orders imposing fines.
