EVELEYN COUZINS MEMORIAL

REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL “I fail to understand what all the criticism has been about. It is a great improvement.” said Cr. C. D. W. L. Sheppard at a meeting of the Christchurch City Council last evening when commenting on the section of the abattoir and reserves committee's report which described the work being carried out on the Eveleyn Couzins memorial in the Botanic Gardens. There had been a great deal of criticism of the plans for the memorial. but none could deny that there would be a great improvement, said the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews). The memorial itself was not a building, but seats, from which the public would get a good view of the archery lawn through to the rose gardens. i “A mountain has been made out of a molehill,” said Cr. J. N. Clarke. “When the public see the finished job they will be very pleased with it.” The report said that good progress had been made with the alteration to the design where the memorial was to be situated. The main walk from the museum had been extended and the shrubberies and general design in front of the Art Gallery had been altered in conformity with the general I plan. The site for the stone wall and ' memorial seats had been defined.
