WELCOMING OF IMMIGRANTS
QUESTION BY COUNCILLOR 1 “It is about time that this council, ■ if it is interested, should follow up the work of ths Immigrants’ Society,” ; said Cr. A. R. Guthrey when he ask- | ed, at last evening’s meeting of the ' City Council, what part the Public Relations Officer (Mr T. H. Langford) played in welcoming immigrants. “I understand all sorts of promises are made.” said Cr. Guthrey. “The immigrants are asked to fill in forms as to clubs and associations they would like to join and nothing at all is done.” “Mr Langford spends no end of time in trying to get these chaps mto productive jobs.” replied Cr. J. N. Clarke. “These people want specialised jobs he can’t fit them in. I can assure the council that he has done his level best to place every immigrant.” The Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), said he attended, if possible, all welcomes to immigrants, and Mr Langford represented the expansion and development committee. The hope was expressed that the immigrants would be happy. Most were allocated to jobs before they arrived, and Mr Langford had a great deal to do with Government officials in fitting them into jobs. Cr. Guthrey: What part does Mr Langford play? Cr. Clarke: He deals with them outside the council, as a member of the expansion and development committee. “More than that.” added the Mayor. “He is a member of the Immigrants’ Committee.”
