OLD MINE TUNNEL TO BE SEALED

CAUSE OF STRANDING OF DREDGE From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH. September 19. The old mine tunnel which has twice caused the stranding of the Ngahere Gold Dredge at Atarau is to be permanently sealed. This was agreed upon after the directors of the company and the Christchurch agent for Lloyd’s Insurance Group (Mr T. Combelleck) had made an inspection of the stranded dredge at the weekend. A shaft is to be sunk from the surface of the tunnel near its mouth and the passage will then be filled with concrete. By doing this the company hopes to overcome the risk of piercing any more cross-cuts from the main mine tunnel. These crosscuts may be more than 70 years old. but they cannot be located as the Mines Department has refused permission to enter the tunnel for an inspection. Salvage experts who examined the the week-end could find no signs of damage, except for the broken ladder. Only the bow of the dredge is now in the water. Efforts are being made to close the breach in the pond where the water is still into the tunnel. Heavy timber and spoil is being pushed over the bank of tfie pond.
