AID TO BACKWARD AREAS
PROPOSAL BY U.N. COUNCIL (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 7. The United Nations Economic and Social Council's proposed programme of world-wide technical assistance to under-developed areas would cost between 15.000,000 and 25,000.000 dollars in the first year, said Mr A. D. K. Owen, the United Nations Assistant-Secretary-General in charge of economic affairs, to-day. He said that the programme was expected to provide for economic development missions to survey resources and discover the most promising lines of development in various countries. Special missions would deal with the reorganisation of civil services, the provision of industrial consultants, and the combating of illiteracy.
